As you may know, Chris McGroarty has signed for us till the end of the season and played well for us in the away derby at Stenhousemuir on Saturday 19th Feb. His signing is a real boost for the remainder of our season - he has played at a higher level with Dunfermline and `Shire fans are aware of his qualities after a good 3 games with us as a trialist. This arrangement suits both `Shire and Chris - we can use his talents for the rest of the season and he can `keep his hand in` and showcase his qualities to interested full time clubs for a possible move during the close season. I`m sure we all wish him well in his time here as a `Shire player.

I noticed in Friday's Press and Journal that Sean McAuley has been released by the club. Are the Shire now so well endowed with midfielders that we can dispense with such a player? Sean was one of the very few bright sparks in a very dismal two last seasons. I hope he goes on to better things.

I too was sorry to see Sean go, player of the year for the 2002/03 season and someone who had talent. He was one of the young prospects who was breaking through into the 1st team in 2001/02 season when we were still a `normal` club. He was one of the few that remained at the club when our chairman insisted that almost every player take a 2/3rds wage cut and play for a much publicised flat fee of £10 a week in summer 2002. Unfortunately I think that what can only be described as 2 very traumatic seasons since then have done him more harm than good, perhaps a case of too much too young. I will always remember his brilliantly chipped winning goal from the edge of the box that sank league leaders Brechin at Glebe Park in the autumn of 2001 to send `Shire fans home delighted. I`m sure we all wish him well and hope he can recapture the spirit and form that made him a prospect with us and get back into football soon.

It is indicative that either a) Scottish football has hit rock-bottom in that quality players are signing for the 'Shire. or b) some Scottish footballers are still committed to the game, recognise the potential of certain lower league teams and their supporters, and realise that some of the higher league teams will not appreciate their qualities, skills and attributes. Not surprisingly, I think the latter
Given that I appreciate the qualities of players vicariously, my understanding is that Chris McGroarty is a positive benefit to the 'Shire and, if goals means quality, then he is quality. Likewise, Sean McAuley, for people who's opinions I sincerely respect to praise a player so highly then he must also be a quality player and, as such, a sad loss for the 'Shire.
If either Sean or Chris read this missive then I wish you both "bon chance".

I sincerely apologise, Mr tookmybaby, for drifting into the realms of reality and comprehensibility. It is a terrible affliction that hits me every so often. Fortunately, after a short while it departs from my body via my nasal cavity....
