Shire scored 4 goals tonight and I managed the incredible feat of not seeing one of them. This was thanks mainly to the game not being at Polmont YO but at Grangemouth Stadium, resulting in us fannying about in Polmont for 15 minutes whilst the game was going on about 2 minutes away from where we live.
As for the game, all 4 goals were scored in the first 30 mins. No idea who scored them but according to someone who saw them they were all tap-ins.
It's hard to judge much on what I saw given that the game was long over by the time I got there, but I'll do my best.
The "old" players who started were: Chris Newall, Graeme McGhee (playing at left back), Sean McAuley and the now un-freed Jamie MacKay. Jordan Leishman, Chris Baldwin and Ross Gilpin then came on as subs.
The new players who I know were Tony Mitchell who was in goals for the first hour and right back David Harvey. It was hard to judge Mitchell as he didn't have much to do. Harvey looked promising and was obviously keen to get forward whenever he could.
The best player on the park was undoubtedly the Shire 7 in central midfield (possibly Paul Ross). He was full of energy and was unlucky with a couple of good strikes on goal. Hopefully he is a signed player as he looked very useful.
The 2 strikers (both new) showed some promise too, particularly 10 who had some excellent touches. The other striker was a big, burly kind of player and he caused some problems for the Cumbernauld defence.
On the downside, the last 20 minutes made for painful viewing as the defence looked as rocky as ever. This really needs sorting out as it was only some poor Cumbernauld finishing plus a great save from Gilpin and a goalline clearance from Mackay that kept our clean-sheet.
There were a few interesting points to come out of tonight.
1) Gordon Parks, ex-Shire player now journalist, did a piece in the Daily Record about pre-season training at the Shire. It seems he must have impressed as he was playing as a trialist tonight. He had one great shot but looked extremely slow
2) There was no sign of the following players: Steven Oates, Scott Livingston, Stuart Kelly and I don't think new signings Carl Thywissen, Alan Moffat and Kenny Quinn were playing. Anyone know anything about these players? Steven Oates especially concerns me as I thought he was our best player last season.
3) Derek Ure has an injured hand and will miss the first few games of the season.
4) Greig Denholm has just had a knee operation and so cannot play at the moment. Whether or not he will turn out in the defence in future we will have to wait and see.
Think that just about covers everything new I learned from tonight. Would be interested to hear from anyone else who was at the game.
