I didn't think anything could compare to watching the Shire this season and last but last night proved me wrong.
I watched FC Twente against FC Vollendam and if this is the standard of the Dutch premier league there is hope for all of us.
Vollendam are bottom of the league and could easily have been 2-0 up after 10 minutes purley due to defensive errors by the Twente defence. Twente then made 2 good chances that, at least brightened up the atmosphere, but the finishing was woeful.
The remainder of the first half just petered out.
The second half started judt as the first had ended but after about an hour a Ramzi sepulative effort from well outside the box sailed into the Vollendam net to put Twente 1-0 ahead. For the next couple of minutes the home team looked like they were going to go on and win handsomely, but this is where the Shire bit comes in.
They then let Vollendam mor and more into the game and though the most inept piece of defending I have ever seen gave away a penalty. The right back let the Vollendam winger get past him with the ball and as the winger made his way into the box the defender tried to pull him back. When that didn't work he tried to jump in front of him but only succeeded in getting their legs all tangled up and the referee had no option.
Vollendam then threatened a few times before a break down the left wing and a cut back fromthe bye line gace one of the strikers an easy finish to take all 3 points.
How many times this season has the Shire gone one nil up just to throw it away by shear bad defending?
Still the beer is good and there's a new Belgian one for Wellibob called Hommel, a bit sweet for my taste bit at 9% probably a bit on the week side for the wee man. I'll see if I can find a bottle in the shops.
