In response to a pub discussion last night, about just who has been the best Shire Goalkeeper since Charlie Kelly last played for us on 13/1/1990, I have listed all the keepers who have made at least one league appearance to enable the choice to be properly made. Owen Lawson 1990/91 to 1992/93 George Watson 1991/92 to 1992/93 Paul Imrie 1992/93 to 1993/94 Gordon McDougall 1993/94 to 1998/99 JIm Moffat 1994/95 to 1995/96 Willie Lamont 1996/97 Gordon Bruce 1998/99 Barrie Thompson 1998/99 Scott Morrison 1999/2000 Jim Butter 1999/2000 to 2000/01 Chris Todd 2001/02 to 2003/04 David Hay 2001/02 S. Robertson 2001/02 (one game as a trialist) Scott Findlay 2002/03 Jon Connolly 2003/04 Ross Gilpin 2004/05 Tony Mitchell 2004/05 Derek Jackson 2004/05 to date Let the discussion continue ! Hmm... interesting question! From the list the ones I remember as being good keepers are Gordon McDougall and Jim Butter although I seem to remember that Moffat was also decent. I honestly believe that Derek Jackson is at least as good, if not better than those I mention - just look at his performance yesterday against Montrose. A good penalty save and probably better rebound save, along with one or two others in the same game means we should thank him equally as much as Stevie Dymock for us being able to take anything from this match.

Strumps/Ramz
Is George Watson a part of the Watson clan who have played it seems for Peterhead since the world began? I seem to remember reading somewhere that even a set of Watson brothers and a cousin played together for P'Head a few years back.

This is a hard one, especially for recent years where the team has been deliberately been denied a decent team. Gordon McDougall was a good shot stopper but couldn't catch a crossto save himself. I lost count of the number of goals we lost from corners and the number of point blank saves he made. A true Shire enigma. Scott Finlay, I thought had themakings of a decent but had a totally crap defence in front of him, whilst in the same era Chris Todd was just a bit too young to cope. Jim Butter was another in the McDougall category of great saves and howlers. John Connoly was an improvement but he tended to get caught up in things and accrue needless bookings and sendings off for losing the place. Derek Jackson appears to be the best for some time but at least he has a defence playing in front of him which is obviously a great help.

This is a b**tard.
I-2 may just be right in his sweeping statement on Saturday that DJ is no. 1 after his double penalty save.
No, like "na, na, na, na, na, na" on Sat I'm not having it. It is just too d**ned easy.
Loved Ownie to bits until his he was dropped for the Stenny game just after he broke into the 1st team just cos his Dad was Manager of Stenny. What a waste of a great talent.
George "F*ck off" Watson. One one most hated Shire players in living memory. He even tried "allegedly" to attack an unimppressed eldery home fan during one of his many nightmare home performances. A "F**kirk", a Shire "Scum". Playing wise he was not bad/ bordering to a reasonable stop stopper. That didnt matter as he was a horrific cross ball man and every team we played against knew it ! Part of the "terrible three" of the early 1990's (Watson, Workman, Houston)
"Flapper" Imrie. Name says it all. Understudy to Watson and was even worse with cross balls. From memory he came from Plean Thistle (or Athletic).
Zebabee" McDougall. Played in the two great 1990's (in our terms) Shire teams and was a godsend after the guff that had gone before. After the decline of the 197/98 team he was was farmed out to lower levels. Sad end for a very solid, if unspectacular kepper.
"Buzz" Lamont . I went to school with him and didn't release he played football until years later. He was a hard but quiet b**tard and I remember my mate squaring up to him and surprising him by kicking him in the ankles with his "brooges". Buzz, in agony said nothing and eventually got up to shake my make's hand. Pity he turned out for F **kirk. Too few games for the Shire to rate him as a Shire player.
Jim Butter. Everyone know's Jim and if you are old enough have seen him play, he was a guy that played game after game at a very high level. A solid keeper, I for one was stunned when he put pen to paper for the Shire. The 1st person he looked out returning to Firs Park last week was Jimmy Wilson. A good guy, solid keeper.
Chis Todd. For me this was the strangest one of all. I watched all the Under 18 games home and away during 1998 to 2000 and Chris was finally given a game in the last game on of 2001/02. I thought the regular keep was a cert. to be retained but I was wrong and the young kid who played the last game was retained. The boss was right. A player with talent but, very like much like myself. was too nicey nicey. I was sad when he was released at the end of 2003/04 especially as I'd watched him from knee high (we'll only a couple of inches taller then me) becoming something special. Pity.
The more recent keepers you know for yourself but each of them have, at times, raised the bar in their own way. DJ deserves a mention for no other reason in that there is HUGE personal history between the Shire fans and him over the years.
wellibob will you tell the story ?
Now I'm beginning to bore myself so I will depart this thread until next week until I name my Shire 1,2 3 keepers from the list.

Has to be McDougall! Even though he came from F**kirk. Imrie was actually funny considering the aomount of time on the bench. He along with scores of other players signed my "Billy Littles Barmy Army" banner.

dj without a doubt.best all round keeper since ck- and he is my hero.dj is a tremendous shot stopper - the best taker of a cross ball that a lower division team could expect to get.also exudes presence and confidence.

Can`t someone get in touch with Chris Todd and get him back? I saw his graduation picture in The Herald. Drummond must know his number. He could be Jacko`s understudy.

Whilst I agree Jacko is without doubt a good keeper, I've thought for a while that there's something wrong with how he works with, communicates and organises the defense.
I was talking to one of the players about it during the week, and according to him, Jacko has never to his knowledge attended a training session since the start of the season, not sure if he meant including pre season, or since the first game, but after asking about it's apparently true.
And thinking about it I honestly believe it shows on the park..........
I can't understand how or why the manager tolerates this, in my simplistic view the defence and keeper must work as a team, and how they can do this if they don't train together, Dennis only knows (or doesn't in this case).
Get off your fat arse and get to training Jacko............. being a shot stopper and catching the odd high ball doesn't make you a great keeper....... and not training certainly doesn't help the team...........

Derek Jackson has missed approx 6-8 training sessions in total since pre season in July, He works as a prison officer and has a shift rotation that he must work, also he has played on Saturdays after coming off a night shift and has had some great games. It is unlikely that any other position on the park could tolerate players missing training, hence the possible reason why Derek Ure has missed out recently as he has to do a stand-by with his work and missed training for almost two weeks. God help the management if the team drop to the bottom of the league again.

Don`t think anyone`s deliberately slagging the management team. As far as I and most of the supporters are concerned they are doing a good job in difficult circumstances. I think all fans think they could do a better job than the manager but this is not the case. We are all aware it`s a difficult job managing the Shire and we should be more tolerant. The trouble is once the fans get a sniff of success they begin to expect this to continue. We should really concentrate on topping our league of 4 Elgin,Albion,Montrose and Shire. If we don`t finish bottom then that is success.

Football does not pay the mortgage, I should know!
