There will be an open Supporters Club Meeting on Monday 11th April in the Gordon Lounge at 7.30pm, all `Shire supporters are welcome. Topics for discussion include the Player of the year awards, views on this season and an update on shiretrust. From around 8.30pm manager Dennis Newall will be our guest and give his views on this season, prospects for next season and answer any football questions supporters have.

Ramz are non members allowed? Yes (forgot to say, so have modified the post). As is normal when the manager is a guest the meeting itself is under the control of the Supporters Club but ANY `Shire supporter can (and probably should) come down to hear what he has to say and have the chance to ask questions. The one stipulation we always make is that questions should not be political (club politics that is) or of a nature that could be made into a negative press story, the chairmans word will be final on this.

Talk to you about the rest soon Mr wellibob but I`m afraid you are a) going to have to miss the Wolves - Ipswich game, b) watch it on teletext or c) paint your tractor a different colour move a bit further north and get shouted at by Delia Smith.

Can those of us who were unable to attend get a flavour of what was decided at the meeting? Also can we be told what the manager had to say?

The meeting (before the manager came) discussed the Player of the year awards (more about this soon), the supporters club will be organising a bus trip to Gretna (more about this soon also) and it was agreed that supporters club members should go on a close season day out somewhere - suggestions are invited as to a possible destination (and before some people start we are NOT going to Slovenia or Kazakstan!). We also all agreed that though `Shire look likely to finish bottom of the league again this season we were pleased with the progress that has been made and would look for further improvement next season to get us off the bottom.
Manager Dennis Newall and assistant Greg Denham attended the meeting and it was a very straightforward and honest affair. No punches were pulled about the size of the task that remains to be done at the `Shire to make us competetive with the other teams. It is apparent to me that Dennis and Greg are working hard to bring a sense of `footballing normallity` to this club but there is no-one else right now that I would rather have doing this than the present management team.
Many questions were put and some of the responses were interesting - many of the players we are trying to bring to the club (or have already signed) are good at certain things but have `baggage` from previous times and Dennis must deal with this `baggage` or work round it to bring the best out of the player. I think players like Joe Robertson spring to mind here - obviously gifted and a stand out from the early season but has totally gone AWOL since January and has not been seen since (I am told this is not the 1st time he has `dissappeared` from a club). Dennis was most pleased about the recent 3 wins in a row which saw us gather more points than the last 2 seasons added together - and who can blame him? He believes we need more of a goal threat as a team, more cover in certain positions and said that some players would be coming and going at the end of the season (A core group of players have been re-signed). The manager did make the point that our poorest months during the season have been August and February - this was because of injury which severely disrupts a squad of around 21 players. February was an especially bad month because we had the `double whammy` of lack of players and having to play 2 games a week. This resulted in a lot of points slipping away - unsurprising when we were often playing people who were not fully fit. It was remarked that Greg Denham had done well to play as many games for us as he has and he agreed, saying he hopes to play again for us soon.
I think both fans and management got the reassurance they were looking for here - the fans know that Dennis and Greg treat their job seriously and are working hard to make things better for us, while Dennis and Greg can see the fans are realistic, do not have any delusions as to what to expect from the team and can appreciate the improvement that has already taken place. There was some amusement when Dennis came out with the line "I don`t care what the players do behind the stand, as long as they do the job on the pitch come Saturday" [*I had to modifiy this to avoid offending our more refined readers!]

Personally I was impressed by the openess and honest views given by both Dennis and Greg at the meeting. For a while it nearly got me think "what if we were a normal club? " Silly me !
Both of the management have obviously given huge chunks of their time to the Shire this season even although Dennis has 5 puppys to contend with !
One message Dennis did pass onto the fans was DJ's apology for his performance at Montrose. DJ, your right it was F**kirk but I am glad it happened in the one game and it will also take a very long time for you to get into the negative scores with me after your performances for the Hoops in March (especially v the Stenny !). Just don't let it happen again, Ok ?
