More interesting than most Monday nights - I`ve never been to a book launch before! There were plenty of people there - Jeff, the players, the manager, various media hacks (including Tad) and a scattering of supporters and a drunk lassie - quite a collection! I`m still reading the book - there are some small errors in it but overall it gives an outsiders view on a season following the `Shire - and it does what it says on the tin, pretty interesting so far.

Mine should arrive tomorrow. Frderick Forsyth will have to be put back on the shelf until I get it finished. Still forecast for Wednesday afternoon and Thursday is rain, so I might get it finished.

Mine should turn up in the next couple of days also. A pal of mine works for a book distributors and says it is going fairly well off the shelves. TESCO have been ordering well for online sales. He has seen orders for down south as well which is good to see. Not quite sure we are talking Harry Potter type sales here, but what the hell it gives the Shire some publicity which is great. Looking forward to a quiet read on Sun after a good win on Sat!

I received my copy at lunch time today and after time off for shopping and watching the Scotland game I have just finished reading it.
It is a good read but I find it very thin on detail on what is going on at the club. It does tell as to why Grieg Denham and Laura left but other than that very little that we didn't know already.
I'm going to pass it on to a couple of friends who are interested but not Shire fans and I'll be intrigued as to what they think.
Back to Frederick Forsyth now,

We must be getting very posh at the Shire discussing book reviews. It will be prawn sarnies at the ground next!

Can`t believe that Dennis could tear strips off the players like it says in the book. He looks quite a quiet unassuming bloke when you see him in public. Still it must have been very frustrating for him as well as the fans for most of last season. Some of his one liners are brilliant.

By the way Stewart 36 was not at the meeting with Dennis & Greig. There`s only one Stewart 36 but he has several aliases!

Oh Lor, Lor. M. Fordy, prawn sarnies, are these upmarket - je ne pens pas - peut etre Artichokes or Asparagus Tips possibly with a pleasant Paulliac. Now that's posh!!
BTW, in terms of the Shiretrust tenner (a new singer perhaps) will the end of the month be OK? Got a few other things to sort at the chateau.
....and what is it with this ******* mouse thing? If I didn't have a dodgy stomach beforehand I would have had one by now.

Only one review on the Amazon site so far, and it's not a very promising one at that. Fair criticism, or just an Albion fan in the huff?

shiredownunder I would say that some of the criticism IS justified - there are some errors of detail in the book (saying we have only won the Stirlingshire Cup twice is an obvious one) and some people do not get shown in a very good light. However this is NOT a book written for a Scottish lower division audience by someone who is well grounded there. It IS a book written by an outsider who is giving his impressions and general feeling of a club in some turmoil and is written for a wider audience because that will sell more copies of the book. That means that detail is sometimes sacrificed for a good story or line and the author is obviously trying to reach those who became interested in the `Shire after the record breaking badness of the 2003/04 season. If you bear all the above in mind its still a reasonably interesting book and it manages to give a feeling of the desperation and sheer doggedness of the club and its fans through some bad times. Accept it for what it is - an outsiders take on the `Shire with the mass market in mind - its not a history book or an oscar winning script for a major film.

Totally agree Ramz. Authors only write books for a reason and thats profit. Labour of love it is not and I have to say I have read many football books about clubs over the years expressing admiration for the board, fans etc but in the end it is the bank manager who is smiling, and not the bank manager of the football club! A good read and taken in the right context hopefully will enlighten a few others to turn up and support the Shire ..... for the right reasons. Good Luck today to Dennis and the team.
