After consultations between both supporter groups (Supporters Club and shiretrust) it has been decided that the Official `Shire Supporters Club will take the lead in helping the club by `sprucing up` Firs Park for the new season. In the light of the recent decision by the SFL to enable it to get rid of a club persistently finishing bottom in as little as 4 years (ie us!) I think it is important that a) the ground gets tidied up so that people can see an effort is being made to do something to reverse the neglect of recent years, and b) any new players (or old ones!) coming in to train and possibly sign for us can see that work has been done and that somebody gives a dam about the place.
Myself, Treasurer wellibob and Jimmy the groundsman went on a mini `tour` of the ground today and we have come up with the following jobs to do (more could be done but lets not run before we can walk and see how it goes):
a) Weed and clear the entrance (just through the turnstiles), the uncovered part of the terrace and from the pie hut to the overgrown terrace.
b) Paint the hardboard at the back between the turnstiles and the covered terrace.
c) Saw to similar sizes and paint the boards that are pitch side from the covered terrace to the `Berlin wall`.
d) Clear the rubbish (angle iron, metal bars, old lawn mowers, shopping trolleys, dead dogs etc) that lies between the portakabin and the metal side door.
A supply of paint and rollers will hopefully be provided by the Supporters Club but gardening tools brought by those assisting on a particular night should be taken away with them when work is finished. We may also need a van (or `pick up` truck) to dispose of the rubbish beside the portakabin.
The Supporters Club are asking for volunteers to help us take on this task - you don`t have to be a member, just somebody who wants to do something positive to help the club. You don`t have to work a huge shift, even 30 Min's work would be helpful to us - chase away the boredom of the close season and give a little of your time! We plan to work for 1 or 2 nights a week (Monday - Thursday) from approx 7 - 9pm, you may even get a free drink afterwords in one of the local pubs! We hope to start at 7pm on Tuesday night (14th) weather permitting - update to follow nearer the time.
